Martin Paulson

July 16, 1918 — February 13, 2016

Martin Paulson passed away at his home on February 13th, 2016. He was born to Adolph and Rachel Paulson at North Bend, WA on July 16, 1918. His dad was a mill right in many locations before settling down in Malone. He graduated from Elma High School in 1938. He was the Senior Class President. After High School he became a welder and fabricator in the Pudget Sound area. This was disrupted by World War II which he served in the Army and participated in the Battle of Okinawa. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as a Sergeant. He never cared to talk much about the war until in his early 90’s. His nephew’s wife wanted to write a book on his correspondence during the war to his sister which was handed down to her. This resulted in the book Letters Home WWII and the Bronze Star. After the war he spent time back at the ship yards, fishing crab. He owned a troller out of Westport; he also fell timber with a cross cut saw and developed his final trade as a cranberry farmer in Grayland. In 1950 he married Mabel Heino which lasted 58 years until her death in 2008. From the mid 1960’s they spend part then all of their winters first in Bouse, Arizona then Desert Hot Springs, California. They were a team on the cranberry farm. They spent quality time together at their cabin on Hood Canal which he built. He is preceded in death by his parents Adolph & Rachel Paulson, his wife Mabel, sisters Myrle Rae, Ruth Furford, Karen Bauder, and a granddaughter Jennifer Paulson. He is survived by his daughter Janice Scarbor of Freemont, California, a son Martin Paulson of Grayland, daughter-in-law Kris Paulson of Bay City, grandson Ryan (Collett) great granddaughter Hannah, grandson Luke of Mount Lake Terrace. Special thanks to Jane Brook for her lunches and friendship, Gail Furford, Pacific Care and Rehab and his final days the individuals of Harbors Home Health & Hospice along with Kelly Bearden. The family suggests any memorials be made to the Jennifer Paulson Foundation at 2580 Montesano Road, Westport, WA 98595. Graveside inurnment services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 19, 2016 at the Fern Hill Cemetery in Aberdeen, Washington.
