Doris Spalding

June 17, 1916 — February 10, 2015

Doris Julia Spalding passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones on Feb. 10, 2015 at the age of 98. Born in Lebam, Wash., to Mabel and Charles Thompson, she was a tough descendant of original Pacific Northwest pioneers. The town of Lebam, Wash., was named when her grandfather, the early settler J.W. Goodell, reversed the letters of her mother’s name. Doris successfully raised a daughter, Sharon Jackson; lovingly spoiled two grandchildren, Angela and Heather Toda; and cherished five great grandchildren, Isabel and Nathan Janser, and Cameron, Cole and Chase Warnick. A spunky redhead with a warm heart and passion for reading, painting, crafts, world travel and Elvis, Doris kept her grace, humor and a sharp mind through a long and productive life that spanned two World Wars, the great depression and the beginning and end of the Cold War. She made the world’s best raisin-filled cookies and knew all the places between Olympia and Long Beach to hold an awesome beach cookout. She is a graduate of the Lebam High School class of 1933, attended nursing school, and worked as a bookkeeper for the Nash dealership, the Pacific County Assessor’s office at the South Bend Courthouse and the superintendent of the Raymond Schools. She is predeceased by her first husband, Gerald Kuhns, and her second husband, Robert Spalding. A graveside service celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 21, at Fern Hill Cemetery in Menlo, Wash. Cremation arrangements are in care of Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond.
