Andreas Holzberger

December 1, 1909 — April 10, 2014

Andreas (Andy) Holzberger passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at the Willapa Harbor Care Center. He was born on December 1, 1909 in Deutsch (German) Mokra nestled in the Carpathian Mountains. At that time Mokra was part of Hungary but now is part of the Ukraine. He married Regina Urban on February 28, 1932. She preceded him in death in 1971. Andy and Regina fled their homeland in 1943 leaving behind their house and property. The Russians were advancing west and Mokra was in their path. Eventually they ended up living in a munitions lager (Schiessplatz near Regensburg, Germany) that had been converted to refugee housing. Unable to return home (many who did were shipped to Siberia) they decided to immigrate to the United States in 1951. Their first home was in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where they soon became lonely and homesick. Wanting to be close to relatives they moved to Raymond, Washington where jobs were plentiful and Andy soon found employment as a carpenter. His profession took him all over western Washington. He even worked on the Space Needle in the 1962 Seattle World\\'s Fair. In 1959, along with numerous family members, Regina and Andy became U.S. citizens and were sworn in at the Pacific County Courthouse by Judge Langenback. Andy lived the rest of his life on the Monohon Landing Road in Raymond in a home that he and his wife, with the help of relatives, built from the remnants of the old Raymond High School football stadium. He is survived by the Franz and Theresa Holzberger family: his nephews John, Oswald, and Emrich Holzberger,Rudolph Pojtinger, Andreas and Paul Urban and their families; and his nieces, Antonia Holzberger, Hildegard Janhunen, Elizabeth Oestrich, Theresa Rauschenbach, Clara Hillgart and their families. Rosary Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 21, 2014 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church with Funeral Mass to follow at 11:00 a.m. Committal services will immediately follow at the Fern Hill Cemetery in Menlo. Family and friends are invited to a luncheon and a Celebration of Andy\\'s Life at St. Lawrence’s social hall. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the St. Lawrence Alter Society at P.O. Box 31, Raymond, WA 98577. Arrangements are in care of Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond.
